One of the great things about starting a garden at KGW is the Carpenter Shop. It’s a magical place full of scrap wood and power tools. Taking full advantage of that, we made vertical planters out of empty pallets and built stacking planter boxes out of recycled commercial sets.
To make the vertical pallet planters, we selected pallets stamped with HBT (as opposed to MBT) meaning they were treated with heat, not chemicals. Then we lined them with landscaping fabric, creating troughs at each horizontal board in which the soil and plants would sit.
We filled the pallets with dirt then added small herb plants to some sections and seeds, mostly different kinds of greens, to others. These look great and grow quickly but take frequent watering because they don’t hold a lot of soil.
